Trenched

Resurrecting the trench coat

The trench coat is often slated as the ultimate wardrobe staple. A key ingredient to the five piece French wardrobe. A classic. Forever timeless. Which is why most of us have one loitering within our closets.

I’m resurrecting my beloved A.P.C trench coat, which I got at one of their epic end-of-season sales – hello 50% off – and have had for years. But the question is, how do you update the classic trench and bring it straight into twenty-16?

First off, the trench need not be the prim and proper jacket it once was. Wear it loose and relaxed, ideally a little oversized. Pair with your most masculine, slouchy shirt and pop the cuffs. Pump up the contrast with stripes, billowed sleeves or unexpected colour.

Style with relaxed white denim for easy street cred. Either chop the hems with scissors for a raw edge or fold up once leaving an XL-cuff and a flash of bare ankle.

Top off with a statement bag. Think new season Gucci; pops of red, playful embellishments or cool hardware and you’ll be on the right track.

Keep things firmly In The Now with your favourite reworked denim. Vintage blues, step hems, dyed pocket panels; everyone from Vetements to Topshop is in on the game.

And finally, for the quickest sartorial update, just think pink. Pair your classic trench with a pink jumper, hoodie or knit for ultimate style juxtaposition.
